Honda Prelude Hybrid Electric Concept Unveiled in North America

After a highly successful debut at the Japan Mobility Show, the Honda Prelude hybrid-electric concept made a surprise appearance at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The concept, which revives the legendary name introduced in November 1978, marks a significant turning point in Honda's electrification strategy.

Heritage and Renewal

The Prelude, a name synonymous with sporty performance and style, was first introduced almost four decades ago. The name, which has long captivated automotive enthusiasts, returns in hybrid-electric form, symbolizing the link between Honda's rich heritage and its electrified future. The two-door coupe continues a line that has seen five generations of the model up to the 2001 model year.

A Concept Focused on Electrification

The new Prelude concept is much more than a tribute; it embodies Honda's commitment to integrating "driving pleasure" into its future electrified models. The concept is a representation of what future electrified Honda models could offer, combining performance, style and cutting-edge technology.

Honda's Electrification Strategy

Steve Hui, Assistant Vice President of Honda Canada, emphasizes the growing importance of hybrid-electric models in Honda's strategy. With the ambition for these models to account for more than a third of Honda vehicle sales in Canada by 2024, the brand is rapidly moving towards electrification. Hybrid electric vehicles, such as the CR-V and Accord, have already proven their popularity in 2023, accounting for a significant share of sales. The announcement of a Honda Civic Hybrid for next summer confirms this trend.

Horizon 2040 and Carbon Neutrality

Honda is aiming for total carbon neutrality for all its products and activities by 2050. To this end, the company expects battery and fuel cell electric vehicles to account for 100% of new vehicle sales by 2040. This transition to electrification is already evident in sales figures in North America, where electrified vehicles reached a record level in 2023.

Towards an Electrified Future

The Honda Prologue 2024, Honda's first all-electric SUV, is another key element of this strategy, with sales scheduled for early 2024. In 2025, Honda plans to launch a full-size midsize electric vehicle model, based on a dedicated EV platform.

The Prelude concept will be on display at the Los Angeles Auto Show until November 26, alongside the Prologue 2024. This presence marks an important step in Honda's journey towards an electrified future, offering a glimpse of what car enthusiasts can expect in the years to come.
