2023 Honda HR-V: everything we wanted to know

2023 Honda HR-V: everything we wanted to know

The Honda HR-V is getting a makeover for 2023 and until now, we've been shown the model, but not told everything about it. This week, Honda shared with us all the details about the new model that will hit dealerships this month.

Here's what you need to know about the new 2023 Honda HR-V.

The design

The 2023 HR-V gets a new design for the new year, which we already knew. We also knew that the version that is reserved for us now benefits from the chassis of the new Civic rather than the structure of the Fit, the sub-compact.

What this means is that the HR-V that's about to come to our shores is bigger. It's actually 221 mm longer, but also 70 mm wider. Its wheelbase is also 45 mm longer, as are its front and rear tracks, which are wider. All of this will benefit the second-row occupants, who will enjoy more space, including width.

As for cargo space, it's going to be similar. You'll have a little more room behind the second row of seats, but a little less in total when you fold it down.

The HR-V 2023 is still very spacious with an interior volume of 1,559 litres behind the first row, so it's just as versatile.

As for the styling, it's a much more modern product with a clear stylistic break from the previous version. And it's for the best; the vehicle is attractive. Note that all versions will be equipped with 17-inch wheels, but you can tell them apart by looking at the grille; each one will have its own distinctive signature.

The versions

Let's talk about versions. You'll have four choices spread over three trim levels. First, you'll be offered a front-wheel drive variant (LX). This one can also be equipped with an optional all-wheel drive system. Otherwise, you'll move on to versions with four-wheel drive only, namely the Sport and EX-L Navi models.

On the safety front, every 2023 HR-V will benefit from a more comprehensive safety suite, the latest version of the Honda Sensing approach.

On the cutting edge

Inside, Honda is presenting a model that will be on the cutting edge of technology. The approach taken with the Civic has had some success, and the same winning recipe has been applied here. That means a driver-friendly driving position, but also a user-friendly multimedia interface designed to simplify life, not complicate it. The system will come to life on a seven-inch screen. This will increase to nine inches with the top-of-the-line EX-L Navi version.

The equipment will be generous from one version to the next. From the start, you'll enjoy a digital instrument cluster. The Apple CarPlay and Android Auto applications will also be part of the package, and with the EX-L Navi version, their connection will be wireless and it will also be possible to recharge your phone without the help of a wire thanks to a pad.

The powertrain

One of the big news with this new HR-V 2023 is that it will benefit from a new engine. Logically, it's the Civic's engine that will get some work under the hood. The 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine still offers 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. Its power will be sent to the wheels via the work of a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

This will certainly improve performance, because we know that this engine has heart, in addition to being as reliable as the 1.8-litre unit it replaces. In addition, a new independent rear suspension promises to change the experience.

Fuel economy is claimed to average 8.3 and 8.7 L/100 km, with highway results of 7.4 and 7.8 L/100 km for the two- and four-wheel drive models, respectively.

Of course, we'll have more information once the model arrives here, but you'll soon be able to come see it in person and test drive it. Needless to say, we can't wait to test drive it ourselves; great things are expected from this new 2023 HR-V.
