Last year, when Honda introduced the 11th generation Civic, we knew that the performance Si and Type R models would eventually follow. Recently, Honda officially unveiled the Type R, the high-performance version of the model.
We don't have all the information about it yet, but here are a few things that caught our attention after reading the press release describing the model.
In terms of design, the vehicle is of course inspired by the lines of the Civic hatchback. However, even if we recognize the signature, we can see some differences. The front bumper has a more aggressive style, while the rear features a new spoiler, a new diffuser, a redesigned bumper and, of course, the three exhaust tips typical of the model.
All in all, the new Civic Type R is longer, wider and lower than its predecessor. And, funnily enough, its rear doors are also wider, which is exclusive.
As for its construction, we should expect to find a Type R that is even more convincing on the road and on the track. Its body is lighter, but also stiffer, which will improve its stability at high speeds, Honda promises. And high speed is also its business; the Civic Type R has been tested at the Nürburgring in Germany, among other places, and set a track record for a front-wheel drive production car at the Suzuka circuit in Japan.
Under the hood, we'll find a 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, the same block we know well. However, it will benefit from improvements, so that it will offer more power and better responses. Its capabilities are yet to come. The six-speed manual transmission will also be more convincing. It will still offer downshift synchronization, all for an even more engaged driving experience.
Finally, inside, we'll find the typical Type R signature with red seats and suede upholstery that minimizes body slide. The Civic's new dashboard design serves the Type R well as everything is oriented towards the driver.
In short, it all makes us want to get behind the wheel. The 2023 Civic Type R is expected later this fall. Pricing will be revealed at that time.
