The compact SUV segment is the most coveted in the industry. Sales are there to prove it, and the quality of the forces at play also gives us a very good idea.
Two of the most interesting players in the segment are the Honda CR-V and the Chevrolet Equinox. In the latter case, we're talking about a model that has improved steadily over the years, which makes it very relevant today.
However, with a model like the CR-V, it's hard to stand out. Let's see why the Honda representative is always ahead of the game.
A more interesting powertrain
What's interesting about our two featured models is that they are powered by virtually identical powertrains. Both have a 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Power-wise, they're similar, but when it comes to reliability, do we need to tell you which one is better?
Then there's the question of fuel consumption. Frankly, this is an embarrassment for Chevrolet. The Equinox averages 9.4 and 8.0 L/100 km for city and highway driving. The CR-V, on the other hand, averages 8.7 and 7.4 liters.
The CR-V gets 8.1 L/100 km, while the Equinox gets 8.8 L/100 km.
A difference of 0.7 liters per 100 kilometers means 3.5 liters every 500 kilometers, 7 liters per 1,000 kilometers. If you drive 20,000 km a year, that's 140 liters less than you'll consume. At $1.80 a liter right now, that's $252 you'll save every year, at least.
A more interesting interior
Inside, two things are striking; quality and space. Let's start by acknowledging Chevrolet's progress. Really, there's no longer any connection between the Equinox of 15 years ago and the one today.
The thing is, Honda mastered the art of interior design 15 years ago, so today they're still ahead of the competition. All the competition.
And when it comes to interior design, Honda is also doing its homework. The CR-V offers a total of 2,146 liters of cargo space with the seats in the second row reclined. With the Equinox, it's only 1809 liters. And with the seats up behind the driver, we get the same kind of result: 1110 liters for the CR-V, 846 for the Equinox.
And we could go on and on about the other attributes that make the CR-V a must-have model, such as its very low depreciation, its great ride comfort and its powertrains' smooth operation.
Truly, the CR-V is in a class of its own in the compact SUV segment.
