2022 Honda Civic vs. 2022 Hyundai Elantra: getting the job done...

2021 was the year of the big renewal for the Hyundai Elantra. On the Honda side, the model was revised last year for the 2022 model year. As a result, we're faced with two vehicles that have been completely redesigned and are on the cutting edge of technology. That's an interesting way to make a high-level comparison.

And this is interesting for you, the consumer who is looking for the best vehicle, the purchase that will give him complete satisfaction.

Let's see why this purchase is the Honda Civic 2022

Mature powertrains

In the past, under the hood of Hyundai models, you couldn't find very interesting engines. Honda was hundreds of miles ahead of the pack. Hyundai has done a lot of catching up since then, but it's always coming up short, because Honda has improved the sauce too.

So much so that for every Hyundai engine that powers the Elantra, Honda responds with a mill that proves more powerful.

This is true with the base engines of both models, naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter 4-cylinders. At Hyundai, the capacity is 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque. Honda's is 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque.

With the N Line version of the Elantra, Hyundai suggests a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, an engine offering 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. Honda's equivalent is 200 horsepower (official) and 192 lb-ft of torque. The consensus is that power is underrated.

Then, with the performance versions of both models, Hyundai once again shrugs it off. The N version of the Elantra may offer 276 horsepower and 289 pound-feet of torque from its 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, but it's not enough to shake the Type R variant of the Civic, which also has a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. Power has yet to be announced for the 2022 version, but last year, 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque were mentioned.

So, no matter what version you get, Honda is delivering more power.

Reliability

And with that power comes an intangible, but much appreciated, element: reliability. Hyundai has made progress in recent years, that's for sure. However, it is also undeniable that in the last few years, the company has had several of its vehicles recalled to fix mechanical problems, some of which even led to fire hazards.

We haven't had that problem at Honda. And the new Civic offers upgraded versions of the engines it has always had, so there's really nothing to worry about on that front.

The 5th door

Hyundai made a funny decision when it renewed its Elantra, which was to do away with the hatchback version. On the contrary, realizing that the public was clamouring for the practicality of this body type, Honda brought it back to the index in 2017 and it repeated the thing with the 11th generation of the model that has been with us since the middle of last year.

Now, as much as we like the styling of a sedan, the practicality of a hatchback is undeniable. Better yet, Honda has really delivered an attractive Civic 5-door for 2022, so there's no compromise on style.

Hyundai doesn't even have an alternative to Honda here.

As a result, for the above points and many others (ride, quality, interior presentation, etc.), the Honda Civic is really the one that can offer you complete satisfaction in the compact car category. Much more than the Hyundai Elantra.
