In the next few weeks, a new generation of the Honda Civic Type R will arrive. Since the arrival of the first model a few years ago, we've been raving about it. And now Honda is back with an improved version.
So what's new with the new Type R? Here's what will make it different from the current model.
Styling
The styling of the previous generation of the Civic was not unanimous. With the Type R adopting more aggressive styling and a much more assertive signature, plus an oversized spoiler, let's just say that the styling was not a consensus. The new Civic, which serves as the basis for the Type R, has inherited much more harmonious lines, so its design will appeal to more people. It's a more discreet model that's going to arrive, even if it will be easily recognizable with its larger front openings and its visible rear spoiler.
More powerful
The new Type R will still benefit from the 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine of the current version. However, the turbo, intake and exhaust have been redesigned, so the powertrain is now able to offer 9 more horsepower for a total of 315, while torque is increased from 295 to 310 lb-ft.
All of this promises, of course. And the transmission remains the same, a six-speed manual.
More grounded
The current Type R is a car with a very aggressive seating position. You can expect something even more obvious with the new generation, as the front and rear tracks have been widened (1.0 and 0.75 inches, in that order) to make the model more planted on the pavement. The wheelbase, which increases by 1.4 inches, will also accentuate this effect.
The track?
Not all Civic Type R owners will take to the track, but there are more of them than you might think. This car was designed for the track. And, what will set the new generation apart is everything about its cooling systems.
This will be true for the brakes, which will offer better performance over a longer period. As for the engine, it will benefit from a larger air intake at the front, the result of an oversized grille. A larger radiator was also used, as well as a larger radiator to cool the engine.
As you can see, it's a much improved model that stands out nicely from the one that's leaving us. The new 2023 Type R is expected this fall.
