In the sub-compact SUV segment, competition is fierce. Often, when a model comes out brand new or freshly renewed, it becomes the most relevant model in the segment... until one of the rivals benefits from some tweaks in turn.
That was the case when the HR-V arrived for 2016. It redefined the standards. Then, in 2018, it was the Hyundai Kona that represented the best new feature. Now, with a new HR-V for 2023, the prize goes to Honda. In fact, we have a new benchmark in the category.
The following points will illustrate this.
A more compelling base engine
There are three powertrains offered with the Kona. That's to be acknowledged. However, the turbocharging is on point and the reliability hasn't always been there in the case of the 1.6-liter engine. With the Kona's 2.0-liter turbo, we're talking about a performance model that's much more expensive.
Let's compare apples to apples, then. Each model comes standard with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. Reliability is good in each case, but it's concrete in Honda. For the best value, this is the place to go. Then, power is superior with 158 horsepower vs 147, as well as torque with 138 lb-ft vs 132 (HR-V vs Kona).
Driving
Behind the wheel, the Hyundai Kona is fun and offers a decent level of comfort. Its handling is good, but the model is a bit bouncy due to its shorter wheelbase.
With the HR-V, which now takes advantage of the Honda Civic's chassis, comfort is superior and handling remains excellent. And if you're looking for a sportier ride, you'll find a model that's more at ease with this kind of request.
To convince you, a test drive will suffice; we're that confident.

With a subcompact SUV, you make the compromise of opting for a smaller model. However, that doesn't mean that you want to sacrifice everything in terms of space and cargo volume.
With the Kona, it feels like you do. Cargo volume is 544 liters behind the second row and 1,296 behind the first when the second row is folded down. That may sound like enough, but it's limited compared to what the 2023 Honda HR-V offers, which is 691 and 1559 liters, respectively.
Why compromise?
