March or April: When should you install your summer tires on your vehicle?

You would be hard-pressed to find somebody in Quebec that isn't happy about the arrival of spring.  The days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer, snow is melting, and it is very soon time to install your summer tires on your vehicle and more importantly, bring back your summer wheels!

Still, there are many drivers out there who wonder when the perfect time is to install summer tires. Quebec law says that we are allowed to drive on summer tires starting on March 16th, but we also know that winter isn't quite done in the middle of March. On the other hand, most of us would like to get rid of our winter tires as soon as possible.

If you are in that situation, the following article should help you determine when you should book your appointment to install your summer tires.

There are two distinct elements to take into consideration when making that decision. The first is whether or not the temperature outside is warm enough, while the second is a little bit more difficult to evaluate.

7 Degrees Celsius

You have likely heard that summer tires aren't as effective when the temperature outside drops below 7 degrees Celsius. When that happens, your tires will harden which causes a range of inconvenient side effects such as longer braking distances, less overall stability, and increased wear and tear on your tires.

A recent study looked at the average temperature in different regions of Quebec in March and April and concluded that in the greater Montreal area which includes Laval, the average outside temperature doesn't rise above 7 degrees until the first week of April. Even if it is warm in the afternoon, most drivers use her vehicle in the mornings and evenings and in March, the temperature at those times tends to be well below the threshold for summer tires.

The other element to take into consideration is the unpredictability of winter. The same study showed that Quebec receives its last snowstorm in April once every three years.

With all that in mind, we believe that the right time to install your summer tires on your Honda vehicle would be the first week of April.  That said, you can still book your appointment today with our tire centre. This way, you will avoid the rush that comes every April and you will be able to install your summer tires when you want.
