Honda Civic vs Hyundai Elantra: 5 reasons to go with Canada's best-selling car

In the compact car category, there is one model that rises above the fray, the Honda Civic. The star of the Honda lineup has claimed the title of Canada's best-selling car for 23 years, which in itself is an exceptional achievement.

As for the competition, it has only one goal: to dethrone it. Some have approached it over the years, but none have succeeded. The last competitor to try its luck is the Hyundai Elantra. Benefiting from a complete overhaul this year, it makes some interesting arguments. Despite everything, the current generation of the Civic, remains superior to it.

Here are five reasons to choose the Civic over the Elantra.

Reliability: It's never easy for an automaker to tackle perfection and for the Elantra the mission is tough when it comes to reliability. Indeed, even if Hyundai’s track record improves every year, it cannot match the Civic's, which is spotless.

Build quality: Once again, if it feels like Hyundai is making progress at all levels with its model, the Korean firm has to fight with a company that has more experience and a longer track record. So when we look at the build quality of both models, we have to give the Civic an edge. This is visible on the outside, but especially on the inside and mechanically.

Hatchback: In the past, Hyundai offered its Elantra in a 5-door configuration, but with the new version, this model is no longer offered. This is sad, because the practicality of a hatchback is extremely important for those who need the extra space offered with a hatchback model. The Civic offers a hatchback version with over 700 litres of cargo space!

Performance: Both at Honda and Hyundai, there are regular versions in the catalog with engines that deliver around 150 horsepower, then more powerful variants offering around 200 horsepower. However, at Honda, it is possible to opt for the Type R, a variation that offers 306 hp. Even the base model in the Civic lineup has more power than the Elantra, and the turbo engine offered in the Honda is the perfect blend of efficiency and performance.

Residual value: The Honda Civic has been the best-selling car in the country for 23 years. This love and loyalty that enthusiasts have for it has helped make it one of the best resale value cars in the industry. The Elantra doesn't offer the same level of residual value.
