With several freshly renewed models, it has never been more interesting to store for a Honda vehicle. And the products offered are so versatile that it's possible to hesitate between some of them, as they can all meet our needs.
That's the case with the new 2023 Honda HR-V, as well as the Hatchback version of the Civic, which got a makeover last year. Which model to choose when both are packed with qualities?
Let's take a look at a few things
Chassis and powertrain
The new HR-V is based on the same chassis that serves the Civic. It's a tie, then, because you get the same solidity and comfort level. The Civic's advantage is that it's more agile because of its lower center of gravity.
As for the engine, it's a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder offering 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque that serves both models. It's a little livelier in the Civic because of the latter's lower weight, but that's negligible. If you want more power, the Civic offers a second powertrain, a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that offers 180 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque.
The good news is that reliability is the same throughout, which is impeccable.
Interior volume
The Civic Hatchback, because of its hatchback and the fact that its rear seats can be folded down, offers the versatility of an SUV. Beware, however, that the HR-V offers more volume. Numbers don't matter here. It really depends on how you normally use your cargo space. Both can serve you well, but if you often have larger items to carry, the HR-V will be the better choice.
All-Wheel Drive
Here, it's easy to decide; the HR-V is available with AWD, but the Civic 5-door is not. That said, if you live in a place where the roads are more often clear than snowy or icy, the Civic will never put you in trouble. It's up to you.
Fuel economy
Finally, where the Civic gets a bit of revenge is on the fuel economy front. That's fine with the HR-V, as it's possible to maintain an average of around 8 L/100 km quite easily. On the highway, it's closer to 7 liters. However, with the Civic, the average is going to be around 6.0 or 6.5 liters at all times. The powertrain in both models is exceptional, really.
So, a Civic Hatchback or an HR-V? As you can see, it depends on your needs, because both have everything you need. Stop by and take a closer look at the models.
