2022 Honda Civic vs. 2022 Hyundai Elantra: The master and the pupil

2022 Honda Civic vs. 2022 Hyundai Elantra: The master and the pupil

They say imitation is the greatest of flatteries. The same could be said for comparison, because when a product is measured against the one that rules the roost in a given field, it's doing it right.

Take the case of the 2022 Hyundai Elantra for example. The fact that it is measured against the 2022 Honda Civic proves that it has the tools to stand up to it. However, it lacks that little something that could make a difference. Let's see how the Civic manages to rise above one of its biggest rivals.

Timeless styling

You can't fault the boldness that Hyundai has shown with its latest Elantra. From the rear, honestly, the styling is fabulous. However, the same can't be said for the front and over time, one thing will happen; the model will no longer be attractive. Honda has done a good job with the new Civic. It looks great, but more importantly, it has timeless lines. In 10 years, this car will still be beautiful... and it will still be worth it.

Long-term value

Let's talk about that value. The residual price with a Honda Civic is about 20% less than the purchase price after three years of use. With an Elantra, it's 30%. That 10% difference has to be absorbed somewhere, often with your monthly payments. And for those who keep their model longer, you'll find, with a smile on your face, that your Civic will be worth a lot more than any Elantra in 6, 8 or 10 years.

That's another very important point to consider.

More practical

The Civic is still available with a five-door body style. The presence of a hatchback makes all the difference. Sadly, Hyundai decided to drop this option with the Elantra, forcing you to make the transition to a more expensive SUV. If you still want a car, but with the practicality of an SUV, Honda is still there to serve you.

Reliability

Finally, if we had to bet on long-term reliability, we'd put our dollars on the Civic. It's proven itself over the years and the new generation promises to be just as reliable, as it benefits from the same proven mechanics found in the previous generation. Hyundai should do just as well, but caution is advised, as there have been recalls within the company in recent years.

No doubt, the Civic delivers the goods here. In fact, it delivers on every point of comparison that anyone wants to throw at it. It's like the master in front of his pupil, really.
