2022 Honda Civic: Technology for fuel efficiency

With the current fuel price madness, the most fuel-efficient vehicles are the most popular. This is obviously the case with the Honda Civic, which is already the most popular car in Canada.

It's becoming even more so, because when it comes to fuel efficiency, you can't beat it. But what makes this car so efficient and fuel-efficient?

Let's take a look at its secrets

Engine and transmission

It's the combination of the Honda Civic's engine and continuously variable transmission (CVT) that makes it so exceptional in terms of fuel economy. In fact, you get the benefit of very frugal powertrains at the core. When you combine their work with the CVT, you get impressive results.

Here are some figures.

With the 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine (158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque) that serves the base versions, we find attractive ratings; 7.7 L/100 km in the city, 7.0 L/100 km on the highway, all for an average of 6.9 L/100 km.

Switching to the 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine (180 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque), found with the more upscale variants, there's no compromise; 7.6 liters for highway driving, 7.1 liters for city driving, again for a combined average of 6.9 liters.

If you opt for the 5-door manual transmission version, the advertised ratings are slightly higher, but it's minimal.

Econ mode

Another technology found in the Civic is the Econ mode. This mode works in several ways to improve fuel economy. First, it reduces the sensitivity of the throttle, so that you have to apply more pressure to get the desired result. This reduces the strain on the engine, which in turn reduces fuel demand.

Secondly, the transmission becomes more selective and less nervous. In fact, it becomes lazier and limits the number of simulated gear changes. By changing gears less often, the vehicle maintains a more stable and reduced fuel consumption. Finally, the air conditioning system only does what is necessary. It works to get you to the desired temperature, but without unnecessary effort that affects the vehicle's fuel efficiency. It's a very subtle job, but very effective!

That's why, by driving a Honda Civic 2022 smoothly, it's possible to get away with ratings of around 6 L/100 km. On the highway, don't be surprised if you get even better mileage.

Truly, a model of efficiency.
