In the past, the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla were offered as hatchbacks. After that, there was a period where only the sedan version of these two models was suggested.
Things started to change in 2016 when Honda brought back its 5-door to the catalog. Toyota did the same with its Corolla in 2018, so we have two modern and interesting models to compare now.
Unfortunately, the fun ends there for Toyota, as all the matchups with the Civic make it clear how far behind its rival it already is. See how much more complete a car the new 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback is.
More capable powertrains
Toyota powertrains, admittedly, are incredibly reliable. So are Honda engines! So Toyota can't claim to offer more durable, more solid mills.
And certainly not more powerful. In the case of the hatchbacks we're interested in, this is striking. The Civic's 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder offers 180 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. The Corolla's 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine offers only 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque.
What's more, the base Civic hatchback can be served with the Civic sedan's entry-level engine, a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque.
And to add to the fun, Honda's manual transmission is more pleasant to handle, which adds a touch of fun to the driving experience.
The drive
Let's talk about the driving experience. When you drive the new Civic, which benefits from a stiffer chassis, the first thing you notice is its dynamic nature. With the Corolla, you notice a better solidity, but you understand that the car has its limits when you guide it a little too sporty; you don't have this problem with the 2022 Civic Hatchback.
For all these reasons and many more, the Honda Civic remains a benchmark hatchback. Come by the dealership to see just how good it is.
