The Mazda CX-5 has had a successful career. You could even say that the qualities it put forward when it arrived on the market 10 years ago forced the competition to go back to the drawing board. However, we can’t say it has evolved a lot since then. It has progressed, but it hasn't been transformed.
The Honda CR-V has been redesigned twice since then, and the latest redesign, coming in 2023, is another example of Honda's expertise. The model is ahead of the competition in multiple ways including features, safety, and interior space. It certainly gives you more space inside than the CX-5, and it also provides an impressive resale value. Let’s take a closer look.
Interior volume
When the Mazda CX-5 first came on the market, it had a very modern, avant-garde design. Its lines were prioritized at the expense of its cargo volume. Unfortunately, nothing has been corrected since then, so the gap between the CX-5 and all its competitors is growing.
Its maximum volume is 1,687 litres with the rear seats down. The new Honda CR-V gives you 2,166 litres. That difference is the trunk space of a mid-size sedan. That's a lot of room and it will make all the difference on your next family vacation or your next trip to Costco.
Fuel economy
Once again, when the CX-5 was introduced, Skyactiv technology made it the new benchmark for fuel economy in the compact SUV segment. The base engine of the original model is no more and the competition has since come up with more efficient solutions.
Today, the CX-5's most efficient engine (2.5-litre 4-cylinder) offers a highway rating of 7.9 L/100 km. The CR-V's regular engine (1.5-litre turbo 4-cylinder) does better with an average of 7.0 L/100 km on the highway. And that's without counting the presence of Honda's new hybrid variant. In other words, the CR-V gives you the best fuel economy rating of just about any compact SUV with its base engine, and the hybrid does even better.
Resale value
While build quality and reliability are similar from one model to another, there is another area where the new 2023 Honda Cr-V stands out, and that’s the resale value. Basically, over a 5-year period, your CR-V will retain 5% more value than any Mazda CX-5. That's not much, you might say, but it represents thousands of dollars.
